U.S. Postal Service Green Building Design
|
|
ARCADIS designed a new 22,400 square-foot mail distribution facility including administrative offices, workroom, investigative office, lunch room, rest rooms, and canopy for protection of carriers while loading postal vehicles. This project emphasized "green building" concepts in design and construction, involving the use of environmentally conscious materials. The structural insulating panels have cores of highly compressed wheat straw, unlike typical panels with plastic foam insulating cores. The panels are left exposed on the inside of the building. Brick used for the project is made from earth cleaned of previous contamination by toxic/hazardous materials. The use of natural light and solar shading has been maximized, and lighting and air conditioning systems were selected for maximum operating efficiency. In addition, the contractor was required to recycle waste materials.
