Summit County Bridge Replacement

ARCADIS engineers designed the rehabilitation of an existing bridge carrying S.R. 18 (East Market Street) over the CSX railroad tracks with a new superstructure in the City of Akron, using phased construction to maintain traffic. Beam spacing was reduced to minimize the superstructure depth to provide vertical clearance over the railroad. Specific details were required to support the numerous utilities on the bridge. The plans for the project were prepared in metric units. The spans were 54 feet (16.4 meters) and 57 feet (17.4 meters) with a 30o skew. The project consisted of a two-span rolled steel beam superstructure on existing stone abutments and concrete pier. The existing stone abutments were converted semi-integral abutments. Elastomeric bearings replaced the existing bearings. The SUM-18-1027 replacement project was constructed in 2001.
