Wake County Schools Centeral Services Complex

This project united dispersed school functions on a 102-acre site. Floodplain boundaries by the Corps of Engineers dictated the limits of buildable area on the site and governed the final facility arrangement.

Offices of facilities planning, engineering, and support departments are located in a single building at the entrance to the complex. The operations building houses its own administration and those disciplines required to maintain all of the County's public school buildings and their grounds. Situated nearby are a greenhouse for propagating landscape plants, a storage building for large equipment, and a garage for maintaining all of the school system's vehicles except school buses.

The transportation building provides space for its own administrative functions, bus-drive training, and the maintenance and repair of the County's school buses. A 107,000-square-foot warehouse serves as a storage and distribution center for all hardware, parts, building materials, and school supplies used by the school system. Federal surplus foods for school meals are also stored in the warehouse facility.

Gravel lots on the north and east of the site provide a centralized parking area for the County's 700 school buses during the summer vacation period.
