Laurens County Library

ARCADIS was selected to assist with development and construction of a library facility which would serve as Laurens County’s primary public library. The facility, which houses 90,000 volumes, serves a population of 56,000. The site, donated to the Laurens County Library Board, dictated a long, narrow structure with a “front” elevation on three sides.

Laurens County requested an open and flexible floor plan which allowed clear and unobstructed views between all areas; this type of floor plan would allow supervision of the facility with minimal staff. Long-span trusses were incorporated into the design to minimize interior load-bearing walls and columns. Interior windows were incorporated into the design to allow observation of common areas from the staff areas.

The facility houses areas for children, adolescents, and adults; a storytelling area; circulation and reference areas; boardroom and staff areas; workrooms; a bookmobile garage; and a community meeting room. The meeting rooms and support facilities are designed to facilitate after-hours access.

Most of the furniture from the previous facility was refinished and incorporated into the final design. We specified the use of brick, arched windows, and a shingled roof to allow the facility to blend harmoniously with the architectural style of the library’s historic/residential location.
